That was what people called it. A lot of the time, people hated the concept of it all, rumors, because they only ever complicated things. More often than not, the information given by them wasn't even true, and even if these rumors were accurate, they were typically accompanied by some sort of nonsensical twist that would most likely mislead the people who weren't entirely understanding of the actual situation. It seemed as though they always told a story that was different from the real thing, in one way or another. Not only that, but they also always had the tendency of hurting or offending someone with the supposed information that was reported, whether said person was specifically targeted by the story or not. Hideki didn't really follow up on a lot of rumors or much of the gossip that went through Ouran Academy at all. It was either because no one ever bothered to update him on what was 'happening' around the school or simply because he didn't actually care for any of it. Granted, he was vice-president of the school's Newspaper Club, and therefore should have had a keen knowledge for all things regarding his school. Still, he hadn't any interest for anything that was more than likely false, unless given the circumstance of being assigned to research something himself for the sake of determining whether or not it were true, by way of a potential newspaper article. If all it was was gossip, targeting innocent students and putting them through a certain version of hell full of ridicule and absurd misunderstandings all because of one little bit of information gathered by an inaccurate source, then he wanted nothing to do with it. Although, there were some rumors that spread which were more positive than negative and didn't involve all the damaging of a person's self esteem, and he knew this. Still, it always seemed different from that, with how often drama was caused by the products of "Rumor Mill". Soon enough, however, he'd found that a certain rumor became a bit too widespread throughout the school for him to successfully avoid or even ignore. It was difficult to not pay attention to something involving your own girlfriend after all... or your cousin... or even, something that told of your cousin becoming particularly attached to your girlfriend in a manner less than pleasing to hear about. He'd heard murmurs of both of their names in what he assumed to be the same sentence when he passed through hallways or through his own classroom, but the instance in which he'd been wholly introduced to the subject of the two together was when a fellow student had actually confronted him about it. A gossip-hungry girl by the looks of her, presenting quite an enthusiastic grin along with a glint of curiosity in her eye as she approached him. She'd stopped just in front of him, coming almost from out of nowhere or so it seemed, cutting him off away from his own path he'd been walking down. Hideki brought himself to a halt immediately, appearing to be rather startled by this sudden appearance. Before he could get a word out or any other form of a greeting, she'd leaned towards him in anticipation. "Ne, is it true?" she questioned him outright. A wide-eyed Hideki found himself leaning directly away from the girl the moment he'd seen her leaning towards him, confusion evident all across his face. "H-Huh?" |
The girl tilted her head to the side a bit. "She's cheating on you, isn't she?!"
It was the first time anyone had mentioned it to him, but after this confrontation, there came many more similar to it. He could remember a time where the girl who'd been standing ahead of him in the cafeteria line had allowed him to cut in front of her. The look she wore on her face and the seemingly sympathetic words she'd given him afterwards made it fairly clear to him that she'd only done that out of pity.
"You seem like a real nice guy," the unfamiliar girl had said to him. "I dunno why anyone would ever want to betray you like that..."
He'd been contemplating whether he should have said something to Miyuki about it; with all the feedback being directed to him, all regarding the rumor about her and Shinkuto having some sort of romantic feelings for each other, maybe it was ideal for Hideki to say to her how uncomfortable it made him feel. For the sake of their relationship. It wasn't as though he hadn't trusted her; he just wanted to get it off his chest or something, because she certainly hadn't said a single thing about it to him at all. Had she even known about the gossip that was spreading about her? What would she think of it? Maybe she did know, but simply hadn't thought much of it because she didn't believe it was worth getting upset about. If that were the case, would she feel offended if he brought it up to her? Would she think that he didn't find her faithful, or that he had some sort of self esteem issues that could easily interfere with their relationship? He'd always had confidence issues, but none that she found to be threatening to their stability with one another.
He ended up saying nothing about it at all to her. It wasn't just because of what aforementioned fears he had, though.
It was also due to the latest addition to the variety of rumors that circulated through the school; one that had to do with him again, albeit more directly this time:
"Are you and Lil-senpai going out now?" a new gossip-influenced student had asked him one day, practically out of nowhere.
"E-Ehhh? N-No! W-Wait, wh-where did you even get that idea from-?!" he demanded shakily.
He never got any answers from anyone that led straight to the original source. When he would ask one person about who'd told them about Miyuki and Shinkuto's supposed get-together or about he and Lilith's assumed romance, they'd guide him to another student who'd apparently been informed by another person, who would then direct him to a friend of theirs, then an acquaintance of theirs... It was a never-ending circle. A chain of informants all scattered throughout the academy in random order. It was like a network, even. He couldn't put a stop to it.
Unfortunately, he was helpless in the aspect of solving his latest predicament as well. There was no way he could confront Miyuki with the rumor about her if there'd been a new rumor about him that told of a similar tale to that of the Miyuki-related gossip: according to the many mouths of Ouran, they were both cheaters, going behind each other's backs and freely developing feelings that they were forbidden to have for any other person aside from each other; according to the school's inescapable Rumor Mill, they were traitors to one another, having people other than each other residing within their hearts, and hadn't any shame whatsoever.
But Hideki did feel ashamed. He hadn't even been aware of how he'd apparently been cheating on Miyuki, but he felt bad about it. And he felt bad for himself, too, because the more he sat back and kept it all to himself, he started to notice the smallest of change in Miyuki's behavior, and that was just enough to make him believe the information he'd been hiding from her all along.
Miyuki liked Shinkuto; Shinkuto liked her back.
He didn't know exactly what had determined this for himself, but he knew it now.
So, what about the rest of the rumor? What was the reality pertaining to that?
He couldn't quite answer that; not because he couldn't come up with an answer, no, that wasn't it. Now that he knew of Miyuki's 'crime' of being attracted to Shinkuto, a sense of relief Hideki had felt made the answer so very clear to him. He just couldn't handle the fact that Rumor Mill was proving to be more and more accurate, in spite of all his opinions on the concept that he'd had beforehand.
The students of Ouran and their unknowing perspectives said that Nakamura Hideki had feelings for Kurosu Lilith that he wasn't allowed to have when in a relationship with someone else.
The verdict?
Guilty as charged. [/style]

[STYLE=font: normal 10px arial; color: #1B1F1C;]made by bubbles of btn[/style]
