Just you and I, living the life we could have had. Beneath the blossoms of a lone sakura tree, stands a solitary soul, waiting. ”Hey, wake up sleepyhead, don’t you have to go to work now?” You look up from the sleep that you haven’t been able to get for days into those piercing blue eyes. Smiling back at the face that was doing its best to hide the sickness within. “Nah, I was able to get off today.” You can only reply, lying. He can tell, but still keeps that smile, that smile that is so hard to retain, on his face. There is a silence between the two of you, neither knowing what to say. But then he breaks it. “Hey, can you keep a promise with me?” You look at him straight in the eye, surprised as his sudden proposal. “Of course I can.” “Always keep me by your side.” Silence. “Of course...” You let out, trying to hold in the upcoming tears. “But I don’t want to...because you won’t die, you can’t.” You want to add. He just looks at you with those content eyes, the small smile still upon his face. “Thank you.” ”Hey there Delilah, what’s it like in New York City I’m a thousand miles away But girl tonight you look so pretty, yes you do Times Square can’t shine as bright as you, I swear it’s true.” You decide to take a walk at the local park today, even though the air is at a chilling temperature. You bundle up in your favorite winter clothes and walk out, breathing in the sharp smell of winter. As you make your way around the park, you see a couple walking ahead of you, laughing, pointing out small things about their surroundings, holding hands, and cuddling up against each other. You can’t help but smile at their happiness, the way their cheeks burn a deeper red when one pecks the other’s cheek. You slow your pace down so that you can continue watching them. You unintentionally hold out your hand, expecting him to grasp it and hold it tight, to warm it up in the cold, and to tell you he’s there. Except he isn’t. We were once like that. You turn around, and return home. A tear falls, but is absorbed by the light, soft scarf he gave you all of those months ago, before it can freeze into the cold air. ”Hey there Delilah, don’t you worry about the distance I’m right there if you get lonely give this song another listen Close your eyes, listen to my voice it’s my disguise I’m by your side.” It’s the time of the holidays. You decide to go out and do some Christmas shopping. Friends have invited you over for a party, and you felt that it was necessary to accept. You know they are just trying to help. You arrive at the bustling mall, children running everywhere, shops filled with people, the windows and railing decorated with Christmas lights and wreaths. You only stop to glance at a few things before you get distracted from watching other people. You see a couple with their children. The two young ones pointing at an extravagant train set behind a glass window, while their parents tried to coax them away, One starts to cry, and the other one soon follows, but the parents just smile sadly as they tried to explain to their children. You see their clothing. It’s nothing much, and by looking at them, you know they are short on money. You go to the nearby food stand and buy some cookies before walking up to the children and handing them each a bag. The parents look at you with gratitude in their eyes, and you just give them an encouraging smile. “Happy holidays~” You say, before turning away. Before you can though, the two children grab you by the sleeve with beaming smiles. “Thank you miss!” They exclaim, mouths covered with chocolate chips. Then, they let you go, and you’re back to your own business. Could we have been like that? With children. As a family. You look back to the cookie stand, the same one in which he bought you the same treats that holiday season long ago. ”Hey there Delilah, I know times are getting hard But just believe me girl, someday I’ll pay the bills with this guitar We’ll have it good, we’ll have the life we knew we would My word is good.” You get invited to a friend's wedding. You can't object. You haven't been out on such a grand event in years, and you think it would be a nice release. Spring had just blossomed, and it was the perfect time for a wedding to take place. You arrive at the open field. The weather is gorgeous. The cold, biting air of winter has long receded, and your skin is comforted by the warmth of spring. The sun is up high, and there are a few clouds, yet there is a comforting breeze that passes by. You smile encouragingly to your friend as you visit her before she walks down the runway. After exchanging words of good luck and congratulations, you take your seat. Soon enough, the music starts, and you see your friend's soon-to-be husband, standing there with a proud, yet nervous smile on his face. You don't know him too well, but you know he's a good man. You are happy for your friend. And then, she comes. Her wedding gown is long and graceful, and the little flower girls behind her are adorable. The reading commences, and before you know it, you see the two of them kiss and the crowd cheers. You smile with a bit of melancholy on your face. Would we have had that kiss? You can't help but think, as you twist the silver band on your right ring finger. Could we have ever been like those two up there? And in the whisper of the wind, you can hear, "Always." "Hey there Delilah, I've got so much left to say If every simple song I wrote to you Would take your breath away, I'd write it all Even more in love with me you'd fall, we'd have it all." You live life. You grow old. You see friends gain families, raise children. Yet you stay at your small, cozy apartment by yourself. Soon enough, you grow too old to stay by yourself, and you are transferred to an elderly home. You see an elderly couple, holding hands, playing board games, laughing at the old days. You can only smile at them, as you sit by yourself, at the windowsill. Could we have grown old? Together? Like them? But before any of those questions you have asked yourself could be answered. Before you could go back and see what else you could have done. You feel that pain coming from your chest, yet you regard it as an old friend. Before one of the nurses comes to wheel you away, you ask her to open the windowsill. You want to see the sakura blossoms fall from the trees. You want to smell the fresh air of spring. Soon enough, you end up falling asleep, but welcoming the darkness that comes after with open arms. It is there, you can see those piercing blue eyes of his. Beneath the blossoms of a lone sakura tree, stands two loving souls, stealing the kiss that was kept from them too long ago. AUTHOR'S NOTES: OKAY I’M SORRY. I KNOW I HAVEN’T FINISHED REMEMBER ME.
