❚ TO SAY THAT HONOKA UIHARU WAS AN
"How has everything been in the past few years?" asked the near foreign voice. Kotori could feel the woman's gaze from across the table, but decided to focus her own on the cup of green tea held between her hands.
A faint smile graced the seventeen year old's lips.
'Past few years,' hm?
So the imbecile was actually well aware of the time span that's already gone by.
"Peachy." came the light, almost airy response as Kotori closed her eyes, raising her drink to her mouth for a small sip.
"And how is school? I heard from your grandmother that you're attending Ouran High?"
Kotori gave a mere nod.
"Ah. Well, that's good, isn't it?" Honoka said, letting out a small - almost forced - chuckle, "... Very good."
The third year's eyebrows lifted. Her gaze travelled leftward, then stayed fixated on one corner of the table.
"So I was thinking," Honoka's voice began again, this time with slight hesitation; who would've thought that talking to a modern day high school girl was going to be so difficult?
Letting out a small sigh, Kotori picked up her green tea again and rose to her feet. Her legs felt numb, after having sat on them for so long. Nevertheless, the action instantly stirred up discomfort from Honoka, "Kotori, dear..." the elder woman said quickly, taking in a breath through her mouth as she too fumbled to stand up, "Are you-" a small pause, and Honoka frowned as she stared at Kotori who had already half-turned, "Are you going to act like this for the rest of my visit?"
Kotori blinked once, glancing over to the woman who was - theoretically and biologically - considered as her 'Mother'. Her focus lingered momentarily. Then suddenly, the girl smiled, "Is that a problem?"
"Kotori-" "Kagetsu-san is fine." the smile remained intact. "... Ara. How coincidental that it's the last name of your ex-husband. But there's no need to pretend we're close, is there?" she questioned, head tilting to one side ever so slightly, "Because we could've been had you not leave, hm?"
There was a momentary pause as the woman locked gazes with her teenage daughter. Soon, Honoka's vision faltered, not entirely capable of seeing the look of both amusement and mockery on Kotori's face. ... This was her daughter? This was what that small girl had grown into? Of course, she realized that it was partially her fault for leaving after divorcing the seventeen year old's Father, but, that was why she was here now, right? To make it up to her for all the time they had lost?
Though it would seem that such a goal was not entirely possible today. Now it was just awkward.
Uncertainty more than clear in her body language, Honoka sucked her lips in and finally stood up as well. She pulled out an envelope from the safety of her purse and slowly held it out to the high schooler, "... At least take this." said Honoka, shakily retrieving her hand when Kotori took the envelope, a shimmer of hope sparked through her dark-coloured orbs.
"Bribery?" Kotori questioned, leaning down to set her teacup on the table as she opened up and held the envelop upside down. Falling into her palms before rolling to the floor, were several thick stacks of paper bills. Slowly, she reached downward and picked up a stack.
"For... for university. And granny's medication." the woman explained, but before she could offer anything further, the seventeen year old had already unfastened the tied up money, stepped forth, reached upward, and showered all of it over her Mother's head.
"Please get out of this house." said Kotori, the smile she wore as pleasant as ever even despite the usual lack of warmth.
"Give me a chance, Kotori-" "Get out, or I'm calling the police."
As Honoka stumbled over to the exit, frowning, and taking unwilling glances back to the daughter she had not contacted for years, Kotori merely stepped over to the kitchen with her teacup in one hand.
Turning off the running water after washing the cup, Kotori heard the front door being closed. Dully, she dried her hands, and returned to the living room area, where she stood there staring at the paper slips she had scattered all over the floor.
Her feet remained where they were for a minute or two before she finally moved forward. Slowly, Kotori crouched down and began to pick up the money.
A small, bitter chuckle left through her gritted teeth.
It was so shameful and humiliating that it hurt.
Not because she had chased away the woman that gave birth to her (of course not), but because in the end - even after all the apathy she had shown - she was still in need of all the money offered to her. In reality, she couldn't afford to go to a good university - Ouran or not - even if she won a scholarship. Her grandmother only had so much savings. And there was no way that her little part-time job at the karaoke club could pay for anything more than daily meals and the electricity bills.
Kotori's jaw tightened.
"Coming back after so long," her voice was quiet as she continued to pick up the money she had pretended that was of no use to her, "What good does that do?" she asked, gripping a little too tightly on the money in her hand when she realized that her vision was slowly becoming blurry.
Curse it all.
Sitting on the tatami, Kotori brought her knees toward herself and buried her face into the fabric of her right sleeve.[/div]
